Default Garage door opener question

I'm in the process of doing this mod and have a question for you electrical fellas. I've soldered wires to the opener and to the momentary switch and all works fine. My question is how can I wire the power from the bike to the opener and eliminate the 9 volt battery. Can I wire a resister or something else in line to drop the voltage to 9 volts? Or will it matter leaving it hooked up to 12 volts? Thanks!

Just use the opener battery, they last a long time.

I order a Genie remote from the web. It was about 20 bucks. (You have to look around) Anyways, they are 12 volts. However, most bikes (including mine) run about 13-14 volts dc while running. I'm not sure, but I think that voltage running continuously to the remote will eventually fry it... Check that. This is what I did.

I soldered a jumper across the switch to make it a N.C. (normally closed) instead of N.O. (normally open) circuit. I switched the positive power input insted. This way the remote only receives power long enough to send the signal or as long as I hold down the momentary button I installed in the fairing. Works great for me and I don't have to worry about frying the remote or ever changing batteries. It was pretty easy to do. If you need any further help, just send me a PM.

I installed the HD # 71764-07 switch in mine:

I think you just need a Gadget panel and keep things real simple..

I did my mod a couple years ago and still have the same battery in it. Before that it was years before I swapped batteries in that remote. But if you really want to you could probable run a step down transformer and power it off the lighter? Or run the wire all the way back to the battery. However I think removing the fairing every few years isnt that much trouble.

You guys make this a lot more complicated than it should be. Use a 12 volt transmitter,
take the battery out and solder a red wire to the positive of the battery holder, and a black wire to the negative side. Then either solder a jumper wire to each side of the transmitter button, or glue the button in the on position. Then take the red wire, and splice it into the positive wire on the high beam headlight. Fasten the black wire to a ground. zip tie the transmitter, to hold it in place. Voila, then all you have to do, is flash your brights and the door opens! I have been doing this on various bikes for the last 20 years. Even if you leave your brights on for an extended period of time, no harm will come to the transmitter.
