Default I Hate To Throw This Out......But.....

I got a call from my ex-wife this morning and she told me that her ex-boyfriend was in an accident on his harley while heading out of town. He got messed up pretty good. I'm not sure who called her but my guess is it was someone in his group as they were heading out. She said two things went through her head. The first was that she was glad she wasn't on the back of the bike and second that it happened in California, where by law, he had to wear a helmet. He's a very good rider and been doing it for 30 years but again, I don't have the details.

What got my wheels turning is I am newly single again after a long term relationship ended recently and I tend to do a LOT of riding by myself these days, getting focused. If something were to happen to me while riding, who would know? Nobody knows where I am or that I'm out riding. I have ICE numbers in my phone, which consist of my ex-girlfriend, my ex-wife (and mother of my 9 & 12 year old sons), and a friend who's a nurse. The only thing is my phone stays in my saddlebag when I'm not wearing a jacket so who knows where it would end up if something happens. I'm not on good terms with my parents, we havent seen each other in years now and don't have too many close friends because they are all busy married family men and I only have my children 50% of the time.

I hate to even consider something happening EVER, but reality hit me this morning with this news. I know I shouldn't ride alone, but I don't know anyone else with a bike except my ex-girlfriend. We still ride together every couple of weeks or so just because we enjoy it and we do still get along, but for the most part, I'm a lone rider these days.

I guess my question is when you do ride alone, what do you do to take precautions as to people knowing your whereabouts? Do you carry your phone? Tell people your route? Just trying to help alleviate issues in case something happened to me.

I usually do tell people where I am headed too and the route for the most part. I keep my cell on me ( inside jacket pocket) In my wallet are emergency numbers etc

I keep my phone in my pocket so if I run off the road and end up in a ditch I might be able to get to it . I also ride alone most of the time and never tell anyone my route .

I keep a card in my wallet next to my license labeled "emergency contacts" with names & phone numbers.

I carry a drivers license and a phone. Funny you should mention this, I have a bracelet from a company called Road ID that I (sometimes) wear when I run in the early hours of the morning that has emergency numbers. Maybe I should wear it when I ride?

I keep a card with all my emergency info tucked inside my helmet, and I have a tiny star of life sticker on the outside near the dot logo, so this way the ems personal will know to look inside for info.

Don't tell anyone where I'm going when I ride alone, half the time I don't know until I get there. I also don't tell anyone where I'm going alone when I'm driving the pickup. something unpleasant could happen in either case.

Some EMS responders will check your cell phone for a contact person. Give the contact the name "911" Not all check but a lot do, better than nothing. Other than that, if I am heading out of town my father and son always know more or less where I am going and when the latest I will be back is. I figure when I dont show up for work or I am late with the child support someone will come looking for me so they can yell at me

i wear one of these most of the time as well. Bought it for running and bicycle riding, but works for the same purpose here if license and phone aren't around for whatever reason.

I carry a phone, but wouldn't do any good if I was f'd up. Don't usually know where I am going either.

If you are that concerned, maybe you should sell your bike.

BTW - You can die walking your doggie.
