Default Oil Temp

Put on my oil temp gauge and went for a 40 mile ride. Outside temp was 55 degrees, trip was in town, highway, and backroads. Oil temp never got higher than 180 with sensor in pan. So this means my air cooled bike runs cooler that my truck at 55 degrees? BTW has anyone had a problem with the chrome flaking off of MOCO parts. My tach bezel is flaking real bad but there's another layer of chrome underneath for now.

Do you have the cooler installed? I would think that the temps would get higher than that, but then again 40 miles isn't really all that far, especially if you were not in stop and go traffic.

Also, cars and trucks have temperature regulators that get the engine and oil up to optimum operating temperature and then keep them there. We don't have that luxury.

Took a 170-mile ride yesterday and air temps barely got into the 50's. Oil temp stayed around 150 as long as I was moving, up to 170 at times when stuck in traffic. On previous rides where air temps were higher (60's mostly), oil temp seems to stay steady at around 180 while moving, but takes quite a while to get there. Haven't seen it get higher than 190 since installing the cooler, air temps never higher than 70. Bike is '07 SG with PCIII, Fuel Moto map (tweaked for mileage in cruise and take-off range), Rush 1.75's, K&N, and HD oil cooler (sender in pan).
