In a stock 96" would a cam job make my King idle rougher? Could it make the motor vibrate more at speed?
I would like to get a bit more pull in the 2000-5000 rpm range. If a cam would make the motor vibe more then I would just leave it as is...Thanks.
Yes...Rougher idle=more vibration...Depending on cam.
The way it was explained to me, the cam can't do everything perfect. If the cam is designed to "come on" late, as in high RPM, then it will likely idle rough. Listen to any dragster before take off and you'll hear what I'm talking about.
I have a mild Andrews cam. The idle is only slightly rougher...Hardly noticeable. However, it runs WAY smoother at higher RPM's...Velvety smooth at 3000 to 3500.
When I installed my SE204's and tuned the bike it actually smoothed out the bike quite a bit. Sure it has more of a lope at idle but when it is going down the road it runs so much better. If you put cams in be sure to get it tuned and you will not be disapointed with the results.

Big +. A good tune will help even a stock motor run smoother, at idle and at speed.

That sounds good to me. As for more of a lope at idle I'm cool with that. Fuel Moto will take care of the tune with one of there PCV maps.
I forgot to look, did you put the 204 in a stock 96"?
in the OEM harley world alone there are a few dozen cams. in the non OEM world moreso. Your question would have a case by case answer. So, for a 257 cam with SE forged pistons (10.5:1 comp) big time vibration at idle when cold...but after a minute or so...smooth as a stock cam.
my 2011 103" with SE254e's is smooth as silk at idle and all speeds to redline. Unbelievably smooth and idle does not waver one iota from 1000rpms. I vtuned it with the tts mastertune.
