Just wondering if yall think it is ok to put Redline 20w60 oil in my brothers 07 Ultra. We put it in his 06 with no problem but have not put it in the 96 incher yet. Or do I neet to use 20w50? I already have the 20w60.
20W60 , if you can use it, offers more protection than lighter oils. got cha's are more difficulty in starting....if you have ACR or MCR's not a problem. Initial flow rate suffers a bit till the oil warms up...don't start it and gun it cold. if your bike has low miles and is not fully broken in yet...you might get some mild valve chirping...if you do...you'll need to go back to a lighter oil til you put more miles on the bike.
I have a case and will be switching at my next oil change on an 08 RK, stock 96. Must disagree with the cold flow comments, 20 wt is 20 wt when cold regardless of the hot side number. If the temp where you are is compatible with any body else's 20W-XXX then the Red Line 20-60 should be fine. If it were thicker when cold, they would have to change the cold flow number to reflect the higher viscosity. A multi viscosity oil, in the case of the Red Line, will flow like a straight wt. 20 oil when at the same temperature cold and get no thinner than a straight 60 wt oil at a given high temperature. In another 1500 miles I'll find out first hand if those claims of a quieter valve train is true or just advertising hype. And I expect it will get hot enough in Oklahoma to give it a good test.

Huh? A 20w-50 and a 20w-60 have the exact same flow properties when cold. That's what the 20w means. A 20w-60 will be slightly thicker once the oil is at operating temp which will raise the oil pressure a bit and provide a thicker cushion of oil.
I say go for it. Harley recommends a 20w-50 however S&S(motors are pretty similar) recommends a 60 grade if ambient temps are above 80f.
I just did alot of work to my bike and it's now a 106. I am running 2 quarts of 10w-60 and half a quart of straight 60 and my top end is much more quiet, which is a sign of a thicker cushion of oil which translates to less wear.
The only 10-60 I have seen is also Redline, but it appears to be for liquid cooled engines. Any lube engineers in here who can say if there is a difference between oil for air cooled engines vs liquid cooled? Any problem with aircraft oil with ashless dispersant? Aircraft engines run hard all the time.
