Exclamation Starter??

Sometimes when I go to start my '08 SG, it makes a really horrible sound, like it's missing or something. Other times it cranks instantly as soon as I hit the ignition. I had it to a trusted shop that's done a few things for me, and they said it was normal...that it was because the pistons were at a certain spot and the compression was keeping it from turning. I'm not saying they're wrong, but I feel like it might be the starter. It's actually embarassing...especially when you're in a crowd, and you go to start it and it looks so nice but sounds so $hitty...

I'm leaving this weekend for a 7 day ride and want this behind me before I leave. What should I be testing to troubleshoot this annoyance.

Thanks in advance...

Its probably the starter clutch. Replace it before it damages the ring gear. All ***** and MES make good ones.

Do you have a power commander installed? there is a known issue and an update to fix. Try starting the bike before the fuel pump quits.

Go here and download and install the firmware update... http://www.powercommander.com/powerc...x?ProdType=PCV

Like Z71 said start it before the pump finishes buzzing. Works for some. Seen a lot of starter clutch's go bad though.

I hear ya...I appreciate the info. I'll try the easy way first before I get into the primary. Also, I'm replacing the battery tomorrow...had a friend here tell me he experienced similar issues until he put a 400 amp Deka battery in his '06. I know my battery is getting weak because between rides the battery needs charging...

I'll update tomorrow when I upload the firmware and drop the battery in.

Thanks again for the info

07+ you dont have to open up the primary to pull the starter.

Opening the primary was for the Compensator.
