I'm sure I got at least one in parts, just didn't have it on the road.
This is the oldest (2012) thread I've resurrected for help. I'll go with the standard nut, and skip the nylock.
"Seize (Locktite) ya later"!

[QUOTE=inthechateau;9806587]The nut is 1/2", stud is 5/16x20 threads per inch. Standard 5/16 , QUOTE]

Not that it matters 8 yrs later but they are 5/16 x 24 NF (National Fine)

Course thread is 18 tpi. ( NC)

never encountered 5/ 16 x 20

Too hot for NY-lok nuts. Use a prevailing torque flange nut instead.

That's what I'll use; standard nut & Locktite.

I recently did this fix and found that hardware store nuts didn’t thread on properly. I bought new OEM nuts and they threaded properly. I even wondered if these nuts don’t have a proprietary thread?

They do not, took a "hardware" 5-16 x 24 ( FINE THREAD) nut from my supply last night to verify before making post #12

Those are what you're looking for. They have distorted threads that make them anti-vibration similar to a ny-lock nut but unaffected by heat.

Thanx for the tip, I just don't need a bag of 25. Maybe my local Fastenal store has them.
Anyways, I looked in my owners manual, part # 7593 is the nut(s) i need. Someone else was correct, for my bike the nut is a 5/16 x 24 thread. Of course I don't have one; off to the hardware store...

the stud is 5/16-18 on the head side and 5/16-24 on the nut side. i use flange carbon nut with anti seize. the reason i do i had a nut seize on the stud once. when i tried to extract nut/stud out of the head the 5/16-18 side(threaded into the head) started galling
and was a booger to get out with out breaking it.
