Depends. But I always use between 1 and 4. Yes, sometimes I only use 1.

Four, always. We were taught in advanced motor instruction that if you don't have four on the brake then if the bike goes down the brake handle will crush or sever the fingers on the grip. Also, you are able to apply maximum force on the brake if needed.

35 years on a dirt bike..........just use 2 and I for sure can be on the gas or brake. I do agree that stopping power is greater with 4.
