Default Dyno tune or SERT?

Hello all. I have a 2012 Ultra Limited that I just put V&H slip-ons on. Was gonna get the SERT and a Big Sucker. A buddy of mine recommended Dyno tune over the SERT. Looking for advise from the "seasoned" community since I'm not going any further as of this time. Might do true duals at the same time but not a definite. So what do you think about the Dyno issue?

Yes, you'll need the SERT (or other) to do a Dyno Tune.

Unless he is talking about the new SERT which I believe is dealer download only. That being said, you will not be able to do a dyno without some sort of programmer

Well that shows how much I know!!! New to Harley but to riding. I was buying the SERT, spoke to the guy at the Dyno shop and he told me not to buy it. He made it sound like I wouldn't need it. That he could rewrite the mapping without voiding the warranty. He is a certified Harley Indy shop. Guess I'll need to make another call.

If the Dyno Guy you are talking to uses "Direct Link" he can tune your bike with out you buying a SERT, SEPST, TTS, PV ECT. The shops that use Direct Link can tune multiple bikes and they pay a small licensing fee instead of the bike owner having to buy a tuner. Other wise yes you have to purchase a tuner to be "married" to your bikes ecm and then tune it.

The only down side is later if you want to make changes again you are stuck going to the same dyno shop or buying a tuner then.

A dyno tune can set you back 300 bucks even without the tuner and any time you add an additional mod you'll be back in again for another 300 buck tune. You can buy a tuner from Fuel Moto for a bit more and get lifetime tune support. I'm not trying to steer you away from a dyno tune, but just let you know your options. I've got slip-ons and an intake and am running a Power Vision from Fuel Moto, they sent me a custom tune and it runs great. If you add mod's you just send them an email and they'll craft a new tune for you at no charge. They'll even send you special tunes, like if you're planning a long trip and want to optimize your gas mileage. They've got great support.

If you have other mods in mind, get them done asap, then get your bike dynoed.

Give Fuel Moto a call, they'll send you a Tuner with a pre-loaded MAP for your bike. You'll be able to get a new MAP down the road if you make any changes and you don't have to subject your engine to the wear and tear of a Dyno.

This is my theory on tuners.......
First of all you have to decide if you want to learn how to tune your own bike or not.
Some tuners are more user friendly for beginners than others.

If you are going to pay someone else to do it, you have two choices.

Pick a device (tuner) that you believe is the best fit for you and find a tech that specializes or at least is very familiar with the device you bought and let him tune your bike.

The second choice is to research the techs who do tuning in your area. If you find one you want to tune your bike, use whatever device he prefers.

Tuners (equipment, also referred to as fuel management devices, ecm controllers, etc..) and tuners (techs who tune the bike) have to work together. It would not be wise to buy a device that your tech doesn't like or is not familiar with.

If you are set on a speciffic tuner, travel as far as you need to find a tech that uses that tuner, likes it and has a reputation of great results.

First of all, SERT doesn't exist anymore. HD now sells SEPST (Super Tuner) and SESPT (Street Tuner), but the latter is severely limited in what you can do with it. The market is alive with tuner options that span the gamut from minimal- to full-featured.

Fuel Moto sells a number of different tuners and I would echo the suggestion to call them for advice. Their prices are excellent and customer service unsurpassed.
