Looking sweet Mac. The shield really helps the looks of the bike. Now all we need is to add some tunes......

Capt'n,

Did you lower the bars while you had the fairing open? From the pictures it looks like the bars are a little high for comfort. Lowering them will straighten your wrists and lower your elbows.

The windscreen looks sharp. Do you find that it has adaquate protection for your height, and for the wife.

Regards,

Bill

Bill,

I didn't lower the bars while I had it open. You don't have to open it all the way up to get the windscreen in, and I wanted to ride last night. I have that on my list...(I've been gone three weeks, and the honey-do is longer than normal).

To answer your question, when the mama and I rode to dinner last night, there was no excessive buffetting. The biggest difference is I had a little bit more of the "wind in your face" feel than before, but nothing like the "no windscreen" effect where your shoulders and arms are tired after a few hours of riding. (Hard to quantify how much more...maybe 10-20% more?)

I enjoyed it very much, and no complaints from the mama.

Look at the links in this thread...one of them was to a guy that makes his own...they are a tad wider and allow better sound from the radio AND they are much cheaper than the Orange and Gold brand. Look just as good in IMHO. Plus, you can give him exact heights...if you don't like 6", you can go with 7" or 8" I think. If I decide I want a little higher, I will be ordering from him, though I don't think I will want more.

Hope this helps.

That being said, I REALLY like the change in the looks. It was what I was looking for...I like the slightly more agressive looks for around town, though I will put the stock in the saddle bag for LONG trips...5 minutes to trade them out, and I haven't given the chopped one a REAL road test...though there is one scheduled for tomorrow. Gotta love Arizona!

Mac

Dont spend the money on an HD screen---- I bought an 8 inch dark gray screen for my 05 FLHTI - -I had the same probs you did with the height....I didn't know which size to go with...I was almost sold on a 5 inch cut, then on a 4 inch, and back up to 6...then I talked to someone about it, and they suggested 8 inches...the look? perfect...

Go on EBAY - - you'll see the one I got for 24 bucks plus shipping (33 total) ..the screen looks great, adds attitude -

--oh yeah...as far as functionality, the lower cut is perfect, I just rode 60 miles today in 34 degree temps at 70 MPH in Virginia- -not that much noticable degradation from the 12 inch stock cut, of course, it gives you a better view, and better yet, a little more breeze...I used to get the trapped feeling behind the 12 inch screen...like..looking through a car windscreen or something....

this one provides that "Open road" feeling!

Mac,

Sounds like my experience. I really can't tell much difference in wind between the shorty and the regular shield I had on the RoadKing. It is definately more than a factory EG shield, but nothing bad, and the change in looks makes it worth it IMO. The addition of fairing mounted mirrors will help clean the look up even more.

I road about 50 miles today, and it was 48 to 52 degrees. Didn't get cold or too much wind, and I can hear the stereo fine. I'm considering not putting the big shield on for the trip to Laughlin. I may put it in the tour pac though, just in case. Came back from Laughlin one year and had snow in Flagstaff.

Regards,

Bill

Bill,

Have you put the mirrors on your sled? If so, how is the visibility. Not sure how much I use the mirrors anyway, seems I usually look over the shoulder...but something tells me I use them more than I think.

Mac,

I have the mirrors on mine, and like them fine. You DO NOT get quite as good a look to the rear as you do with the factory mirrors, but I find the view adaquate. I think they are stock of the 05 Screamin Eagle models.

Before you get a set, you might find someone that has them and see what you think, as you have to drill the inner fairing to mount them, and if you don't like the result, you are stuck with holes in the fairing. I had a friend that had them, so I was able to prejudge.

Regards,

Bill
