Default Poss another bad regulator

Well I might have a regulator going out. Today stuck in traffic my check engine light and battery light came on and volts were down below 12. Got off that road and headed toward the dealer and one that was clear and turned off the spots. After a bit the volts jumped back up to near 14 and lights went out. So after running down that one I turned around and headed back toward home. And about a mile down the road sitting at another red light the lights came back on!! Got home checked the DTC's and got a low voltage error, something I already knew. Checked battery cables and both are tight. Cleared the code started it up and volts looked good. So I now have it sitting on a charger to give it a complete charge.

I did just get done reflashing the ECM and wondering if I could have run the battery down that low.

Very bad weekend to start acting up, dealers will be packed this weekend with out off town riders for Rolling Thunder.

For those on portable. This is a 2012 FLHTK with a little over 3,400 miles.

I never jumpon the band wagon, But what you describe is a the same thing that I expeerienced with my bike. And it only did that when the bike was warm.

I would not mess with it and take it back to the dealer for replacement.

Yep only when hot. But how do I get them to believe that the regulator is getting ready to die?

Same thing happened to a buddy of mine down at Myrtle Beach last week. New 2012 K model, less than 1,000 miles, and the engine and battery light both came on. Took it to the dealer and sure enough, it was a bad voltage regulator. One of the first things I did when I got back to KY was to buy a chrome regulator. Little did I know, the chrome regulator is $47 cheaper than the factory one.

I did not have an issue getting the warrantee replacement. The check engine and battery light goes on at the same time volt meter drops. There is nothing to prove.

As it was explained to me at the dealers they are aware of some problems.

This may not apply to you, but if poeple would go in with the intention to get an issue solve rather than expecting a argument you would be supprised with the result. Act like jerk guess what you get treated like a jerk.

So I get to the dealership and there are no codes so there was nothing they could do. Service manager said to keep an eye on it and he was going to keep the ticket open. Went for a ride and within 45 mins noticed the volts dropping and not coming up with RPM. Then the engine and battery light came back on. So back to the dealer I go and wouldn't you know it the lights went out right before I got there. Talked the to service manager and he said that is what it will do when it is starting to go out. So off I go again and as my luck has it they light up again one block from the dealer. So back I went. I kept the bike running and went in and told the service manager. He sent a mechanic out and yup it was dieing. They took it in and pulled the codes, not charging duh. So this time they changed the regulator and now I am back on the road. We will see when I am stuck in the traffic jam tomorrow after Rolling Thunder.

Ps there was two others there for the same reason!

Whitts has one and I think the parts dept is open tomorrow. Also Patriot will be open in the morning. They will close for a bit and then open up again and will be open Monday morning to help out of towners. I bought one as my back up I case they didn't change mine out. They did so I got a refund.

The chrome one is $161 at J&P's web site. The fitment is for 10 thru 12 touring bikes.

I bought one just to have if it goes out on the road on a trip with my son's two weeks from now. Two of us are on 12's. Seems like a good plan.

HD's price for the standard VR on the Touring bike is $214.00.
