Not trying to sound like a dick, but if you don't know then you should DEFINITELY buy a service manual, and CERTAINLY call a buddy, and PROBABLY not to the job yourself.
With that said, you probably don't have to take the luggage off. I don't know this for a fact though. But, if you can get to the clamp that secures it to the pipe then you should be good. Then its just getting to the mounts towards the back. For what its worth I can get to the bolts on my Road King without taking the bags off.
