I'm w/baust55 on this one, but my map comes "free" every year from State Farm. Until my mind goes - it's the best way to travel...GPS devices are for the "preppy" riders...

Do what he said or activate the GPS function on your phone. I use my Blackberry's GPS and one of these. It would work for either. It has strong magnets that don't move at highway+ speeds and a rubber back that doesn't damage the tank. I don't use a GPS very often (it's about the journey not the destination) but this works great when I do. It also works great for the EZ Pass toll transponder.

Prior to ZUMO. I'd write turns down on blue painters tape and stick to fuel door. Also write 1 or 2 for others in the group. Not that I would miss a turn.

Thanks for all the idea, I tried writing on the chrome fuel cap with the alcohol marker, and it works great. Wipes off with an alcohol pad. I used to do this on the wall of my tank when I was training and in Iraq to keep up with mission specifics. I was just worried it would mess up the chrome, but no issues. This will be my new GPS till I get a low profile console, then back to the drawing board.

spiz

I bought $600.00 worth of plastic bags so I feel like I got ripped off by Harley.

I hate GPS, ridden with several guys when their gps garbage. had us running in circles, disregarding common sense or lines on a map. Never again.

Many of the previous reply's are great and are fine for short trips. Each year I travel East Coast to somewhere in the West, usually a 15 day trip. I use double thicknesses of transparent vinyl envelopes stapled together leaving one end open, buy at any Staples, Office Supply etc. I plan each days directions months in advance and write them on a 4 by 6 index card, 2 copies in case one is damaged by rain etc. Attach a strip of velcro to the back of the vinyl envelopes, also a strip of velcro to your windshield Bag, then press the the 2 strips of velcro together. They are close to being eye level and easy to see without taking your eyes off of the road. I just had a Road Tech 665 GPS installed on my Electra Glide. I have difficulty seeing the screen clearly in sunlight plus wearing sunglasses and vibration make it even more difficult. I'm heading for Southern California this year, guess what, yes I have my index cards all made up. Hopefully my dependence factor in my GPS will improve with time but for the time being I will use the index cards and use the GPS as a back up.
