My mech mentioned a code of 3811. I think he said that units produced after that run were suspect. But don't take my word as gospel on this!
Your source sounds informed. I asked mine yesterday. So far there's been no info requested by them from HD. They're waiting until they have a local bike they inspect fail. Nothing offered up yet by their HD Tech Support was mentioned.
Seems some dealers are willing to inquire, others just trying to get through their day.
I bought and replaced my original reg so I could roll w/o concern.
Just picked mine back up, towed in yesterday. They replaced the VR with a new date of 2112, also said they replaced the battery. Not real happy that I had to cough up $200 bucks for a tow on a 1700 mile bike, just a week after spending a boatload on new cams, pipes, PCV, AC and 1000k check. A wash would have been nice! But I gotta say Sunday in DC was pretty darn special. Voltage now reading to factory specs. 14.3 - 14.7 @ 3600 rpm.
I have 4811...4000 miles and no issues yet...I will ask my dealer about it Saturday when it goes in for the annoying *** front wheel vibration they can't figure out...
I just checked my regulator....it say 3311. Is that out of the suspected bad batch?
It's been reported that regulators produced after the 39th week of 2011 are suspect. Yours is from the 33rd week. Still, Harley is recommending if you're headed out across the Mojave take plenty of water and your pistol because there may be other '12 models broken down out there with desperate owners. Haven't heard anything on regulators made in 2012.
Ok.... so I'm always reading on the forum various design problems and getting worked up - when usually the issue never affects me.
BUT... this time.... my regulator failed yesterday. And I noted prior to the failure the voltage gauge was always reading high - but I chalked that up to an inaccurate gauge. I have around 2200 miles on the bike.
Anyway - Westminster HD here in Socal was fantastic. Called them this morning, went in this afternoon and the VR is replaced and all is well. My failed unit was 4411.
I am on a longer trip tomorrow and didn't want it to completely crap out mid way (which it would have) - so I was really happy with Westminster HD - they did a great job very quickly for me.
My only concern is whether the battery life was shortened due to improper charging, but they said it is covered under the 2-year warranty and they can't replace it unless it fails.
Btw - the new one seems to have a better charging voltage (14.1+ range instead of 15+).
