Default Would You Do This? Is It Worth The $$?

The other night I was at my local dealer at an after hours boot camp. I got a chance to talk to the service manager about what upgrades to consider next. We started talking about cams, and after a good bit of conversation he mentioned that he had four brand new 110 engines that were take-offs from new bikes they sold where the buyers wanted the 120r as part of the deal. The long and the short of it is that they are offering to sell me the zero mile 110, give me trade-in credit for my 103 (the 110 retails for just short of $3,700 and they will give me $2,600 for my used 103), do the cams with adjustable push rods and new springs (Wood TW555 cams), and put the bike on the dyno for a new custom map for my PC-V. Out the door price, including all parts and labor, was $2,790.

At first this seemed like a pretty good deal, but when I started thinking about it I wasn't so sure. The other side of the coin is I really don't know enough about the differences between the 2 engines besides the obvious displacement size difference. The service manager claims that between the new larger engine and the new cams the performance difference will be significant.

I'm hoping that some folks more mechanically inclined than me (which is not hard at all!) will chime in with their thoughts. Is this worth it? Is the price a good deal? What kind of difference will I see if I go ahead with it? Are there any gotchas i should watch out for?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

I'd jump on that, if it were me.

I guess it depends on your intended riding profile. Seeing as how you have a touring bike, I would assume touring. In that case I would have to ask myself if I would be willing to trade gas mileage/dependability for more HP. I ride with a fellow who has a large displacement engine, 120, that only gets 30+/- MPG. That doesn't allow for many miles between gas stops.

I think that is a good deal too. But I would think over what 'ppilotmike' said. We don't know you, do you like to race your friends now and then? do you like a good speed rush? all that comes in to play. But as said, it's a good deal.

Yeah, what "PPilotmike" said above. Even if it's a deal, do you want to spend the money for braggin' rights. You're probably not going to race it, so why spend the money when your Stage 1, 103' engine will do the job.

Just my opinion.

Your assumption is right. I'm not a "ride it like you stole it" kinda person. But when I do twist the throttle (mainly in passing situations, etc) I want the thing to go, now. I did figure I would give up a few MPG to the bigger engine, but the depenability part you mentioned would bother me. That I am not willing to give up. Are the 110s less dependable than the 103s?

If you're riding two-up most of the time, like I do, then the performance increase will be worth having. Yes, you may lose a little gas mileage, but I know when I bought mine, 'what's the MPG?' wasn't the first question I asked. If I weren't 1700 miles away, I would have been talking to them about this before I started making my engine mods. I assume they're going to offer full warranty, or the balance of yours?

Yes, they will warranty the engine for the balance of my factory warranty and said no problem with the extended service plan either. My only concern with this is that's great as long as I bring it back to them if something fails, but what happens if I am touring in another state and have a problem. I could see me bringing it in to another HD dealer and them looking at it and going "huh??" I have to discuss this part futher with the service manager if I decide its something I want to consider.
