Never got to investigate to get a full understanding or even whether it is true, but I have often heard that you should not jump start a vehicle that has a cat installed. May be nonsense, really should do the research some time
jump start and push start are two different things.
If you don't have a valve in your exhaust system you don't have to worry about push starting. The only problem is if your battery is to low the fuel pump wont operate. If Im not mistaken (to lazy to look right now) there are instructions for jump starting in the OM
I just checked my compression on my 103 Stage 4 w/ 850 miles on it...115 front 119 rear
that is low. I am guessing you did not have the air cleaner off and the throttlebody plate wide open, either that or your compression releases are part open.

That bike has ACRs. Have to pull the fuse or unplug the ACRs themselves for an accurate CCP.
I would think the higher gear would be a good bet on the bigger motors. I agree also that you can loose a belt pretty quick which is why I am thinking the higher gear.
It's also a good way to throw the cranks out of alignment on the 07 & newer, they don't like that hard jolt. That's why I have roadside assistance, better than having to a engine rebuild.
I have push started many bike over the yrs.A short time ago my S-I-L's.Ultra wouldnt start after short stop sluggish turnng over. He says "Give me a push i know what I'm doing"We give Him the big heave Ho. Get the 1200 lbs rolling. for those keeping score bikes 900 lbs and well he's the rest.LOL I bet we push him for at least the lenth of a football field. He dumps the clutch and it bout put his big a$$ over the bars. He nearly drops it.
He says well What are we going to do know. I say can I try? Well My dad was a patch fllyin club member when He was alive. That wasn't the question. I respect your dads memory and wish i could have met him. Now can I try? He concedes. I slip it in third he and Charley get me rolling. about 20 ft I raise up off the seat sit down like my legs gave out and dump the clutch at the same time and VRROOOMMM.
Sorry for the back story but it was funny.
Moral of the story always try third first.even in a tractor trailer. Its the most directly in line with the gearing in the engine. I cannot explain why I'm no engineer but it will work and may get you out of a jam.
