Default Rush touring slip-on muffler basic installation guide

Rush Touring Slip-on Muffler installation: Big Louie and Standard slip-ons.
Rush slip-ons are designed to mount using stock hardware and brackets.

1. Remove saddle bags for easy access to bolts.
2. Loosen or remove heat shields to allow access to muffler clamps.
3. Loosen muffler clamps. Remove bolts from mufflers and mounting bar at rear of muffler under the bags.
4. Remove mufflers. A little penetrating oil helps greatly and moving mufflers from side to side can help loosen them.
5. Slide new muffler clamps over new muffler inlet (positioning them correctly so they are hidden).
6. Slide new muffler onto headpipe until the rear mounting bosses line up with the rear mounting bar. Hand-tighten bolts to hold muffler to the mounting bar, do not tighten completely.
7. Make sure muffler clamp is over the muffler inlet covering the slots. Tighten until snug but not completely.
8. Repeat steps 7-8 for muffler on other side of bike.
9. Align mufflers for best fit. Tighten all bolts. Tighten clamps to 60 ft-lbs of torque.
10. Re-install saddle bags. Re-install heatshields making sure shield does not contact muffler.
11. Clean mufflers before starting bike. Discoloration due to oils and residues from hands during installation is not covered under warranty.

Basic tuning info:
Please contact Rush for specific recommendations for your bikes setup. This is a simple quick guide.

1. Completely stock 2010-2012 bikes.
a. 2.50” baffle recommended and no tuning required.
b. 2.25” minimum baffle size recommended.
2. 95-2012 with no catalytic converter or aftermarket headpipes.
a. 1.75” or 2.00” baffle recommended
b. Dyno tuning is recommended and usually required for proper operation any time headpipes are upgraded regardless of slip-on muffler or baffle size.
3. Contact sales@rushracingproducts.com or call 866-994-RUSH (7874) for specific tuning recommendations.

I have a totally stock 2012 Road King Classic(FLHRC) and I just want to replace the stock mufflers. Two H-D dealers in St. Louis recommend using 2.00" baffles in the 32001 Big Louies. I told them that Rush recommends 2.50" and they thought I was crazy. Are they misinformed or not.

My question is also about the baffle. Why on newer bikes that have a cat do you need the 2.25 or 2.50 baffle ? I had a dyna before my touring and rush said 1.75 or 2.00" is the biggest without needing a tune. And my dyna had a cat in the head pipe.

My understanding is with the CAT in place the 2.50" baffles helps increase air flow out of the exhaust thereby reducing heat on the mufflers. With 2.0" baffles being more restrictive you run the likelihood of the mufflers turning gold or brown.

I currently have the CAT and 2.50" baffles, no problems and the sound is great. When I get rid of the CAT I plan to go with 2.00" baffles.

With that theory the stock pipes are way more restrictive than any pipe out there. If your saying with baffles less than 2" the pipes run hotter then with stock pipes it should burn to the ground.

The information I posted to this thread is accurate. Thanks for PMing me the dealer names. We contacted them and discussed recommendations. You are not crazy!

Great explanation and this is what we recommend. Just don't get rid of the cat if you live in Cali. The only thing I can add is the 2.00" on a cat equipped bike will sound slightly louder than stock, most riders are looking for more volume which the 2.50" provides.

California law prevents modifying or removing the catalytic convertor. On touring bikes you can only change the slip on mufflers.

For what it's worth ... Removing or rendering an emission control device ( of any type ) especially a catalytic converter, is illegal in ALL 50 STATES ... You just don't want to get caught ... some states still run emission checks and if the scooter is tuned properly you'll pass the test!
