Ok I just got this a 2000 road king police model. After a ride of about 20 miles or more when i shut it off and try to start it again all i hear is a click when i push the starter and a click when i let go of the starter. I tried it over and over and still it would not crank over. But after about 10 mins the thing works fine over and over agian. Im guessing it is my starter going out on me? but i dont know why the starter would not work when it is hot? does anyone else know of any other starters that work with the police model does the regular road king work
The first thing is to check all of your connections, esp. the grounds. Then check your battery voltage at hot start up and also check your charging voltage running. Do your homework before throwing money at it.
If the connections are good, then check the battery. It is common for a battery to go dead but then start a vehicle after it sits awhile. We use battery vehicles at work, if they run out of juice and won't move, just let it sit 10 minutes and it will probably start moving again (but not for long). So most likely either you have bad connections and the battery won't charge or the battery needs to be replaced.
ok guys heres a update, I took the primary cover off and discovered that my clutch basket has a few teath missing. it looks like the starter took the teath out of it. Any ideas if i still need to replace the starter or just the clutch basket. I know the clutch basket is going to be pretty expensive. I am just wondering what caused the basket teeth to strip out
Only way to know is to examine the teeth on the starter. Possible for both to be damaged. Good luck.
By the way, your original post made no reference to the starter spinning without engaging. That would be an obvious clue to look at something mechanical rather than battery, wires or charging system.
The clicks you refer to would not necessarily lead one to suspect teeth missing from the clutch basket. You seem to have more than one problem.
Yea, I havent even put 200 miles on this thing since i got it. I totally regret getting this bike. My V-Star never had any problems like this. So i need a new starter, I pulled it out and bench tested it. Only the shaft clicks in and out but it does not turn. So for some reason my motor isnt spinning. the dealer want 319 bucks just for the starter! and i guess they do not just sell the clutch basket ring so i have to get the entire thing which is like 600 bucks!
check j&pcycles they sell starter ring gears for about a100.00 bucks built by rivera primo for oem baskets you just drill out the rivets and bolt it on
