Nice choice of bike. I was looking at one until I stumbled across the one in my signature pix.
Heat? The bigger the engine, the more heat you're gonna get. Mine had the D&D Fat Cat on it (catless) and had a tune done already. I don't have the issues my buddy with an identical bike has. Might be something to think about if the heat gets to be too much. It'll run you a nice chunk so save up for it.
I am picking mine up late next week and I got the Rush ceramic coated (inside and outside) header pipes after I test rode the owner's RGU with the same set up. After taking an Ultra Glide Classic for a ride the difference in heat reduction was staggering on the RGU (since it was the first one I demo'd). I didn't even think of the heat when I rode it, got on the Ultra Glide Classic and there it was...the famous Harley heat.
I rode a CVO Skunk Road Glide at the Demo day. I really liked it but I have to agree with you that I felt to stretched out.
Though I am torn about how it rode. I like how it felt and the gauges and I know the handlebars could be changed. The biggest thing was turning the handlebars and not seeing the fairing turn. Almost panicked and dropped it in the parking lot because of that.
Though I am pretty certain a road glide will be in my future.
The pluses to me where
The gauge layout
The stability of the bike
And the wind. I love the more of breeze coming around and keeping me cool. Sounds odd but it seemed to have more of a draft.
Some interesting views regarding the shark versus the batwing. I ride a Road King and would be interested in how those of you who went to from a RK to a Road Glide feel about the two bikes in terms of comfort and handling.

I posted on the Sharknose vs Batwing thread about that difference. I have ridden RK's since '99 at work. There is a HUGE difference between the RK and the RG/RGU. Low speed/tight quarters handling is remarkably similar, with the advantage going to the RK due to less weight/mass. Beyond that the RG/RGU has superior handling and performance. The suspension is set up differently on the RGU, better suited to two up and loads. The RGU more agile and nimble with that suspension, and actually has better weight & balance characteristics at moderat and high speeds. I can take my RGU through the twisties faster and with more confidence than on a RK. I recently took an RK through Rte. 250 in WVA, and kept wishing for my RGU or even the FLHTP.
If you do any amount of serious touring, the RGU is a far superior platform.
