Just got finished reading the thread on bad VR's on 2012 baggers. Mine is an '06, and has 70,000 miles on it. Mine has been giving the same symptoms, for over a year. The engine light/battery light comes on, volt gauge goes crazy.... I took it in to a dealer and they scoured over it, and said my bike was fine. He also said because I had an aftermarket battery in it, that it would throw phantom codes...Last week, I went to a rally, and it was extremely hot, and it did it again, except this time, it ran rough. Today, I went to lunch and the radio cut off twice. I am starting to think that this is no phantom, but rather a bad VR. I do keep it on a trickle charger at the house, and I have been paying close attention the gauge since last week, and when I running the gauge pegs out?!!
Some of the 2006 touring models had a recall for the voltage regulator, depending on the build date stamped on the regulator.. Maybe check to see if yours was part of that. Not sure if it would still be covered, but I have my doubts. Also, if you got that many miles out of it without any issues maybe it wasn't part of the recall, or you were lucky.
Voltage regulator or stator, or both. At 70,000, if you have not replaced either, do it now. Or, it will leave you disappointed beside the road, or at work, or at some other place you would rather not be. Neither one is very expensive and you can do it yourself.
If an aftermarket battery caused fault codes, I should have been getting codes for years.
Dealer is full of crap. Change the regulator yourself.
I was thinking the same thing, what does the battery have to do with it, lol, its not like HD batteries have a special chip or something. Really wonder where some dealers come up with there bologna.
I have an 06 and the first VR I changed and then got a letter about the recall from HD. Now the OEM VR I changed in 08 is bad. I have an oil cooler sitting in front of it and a chrome aftermarket cover on it that might be adding heat to the unit? It just seems odd there was a recall and I am now replacing it again.
I have 77,000 mile on my 2000 Ultra.
Had a H-D oil cooler installed with chrome cover.
Still has the stock VR but the original stator died somewhere near 40,000 miles.
