Default Charging system???

On the way to the office this morning, my speedo bounced from current speed to 0 and back up to speed about 4-5 times. It did not bounce multiple times just once and it did it 4-5 seperate times. The tach did the same but about 3-4 times. I then noticed my volt gage drop straight to 0. It wasn't a slow decent it dropped, would hold a moment and come back up. I got the office and turned it off and cranked again. It started but with effort. I noticed all the gagues worked as should and I took off for a drive. I drove about 3 miles and eveything stayed solid and normal. What the hell???? I have an '02 ED Classic with no upgrades and a battery that's not a month old.

Try checking your main harness connections, cleaning them with electrical contact cleaner and the putting a dielectric solution on them before you reconnect them. I don't know where you live, how often you wash your bike, etc, but electrical connections can get dirty, even when sealed.

I don't live in dusty conditions and hasn't been wet in over 2 weeks.

I would check battery connections first. Then check all the rest. A friend of mine had the same thing & his connections to the battery was not even finger thight. His died going down the interstate. All of a sudden he had no lights, I looked back & he was just coasting along the side of the road. His bike coasted a long way, up to where I had stopped. Tighten the battery connection with a wrench this time and he road the rest of the day. He went over the whole bike when he got home. Found nothing else loose.

Another item to check that I think causes more problems than people realize is loose grounds.

The bike never died with the erratic guages. It kept running. It did try to cut out when I came to the first stop light; I just gave it more gas. The headlight dimmed a lot, but the spotlights stayed strong........weird...... At lunch, I went out and it fired right up like a champ. The guages were strong and no fluctuation. I will check the connections tonight when I get home. If I find nothing there, what else should I consider?

I found my positive connection to be less than a quarter turn loose. It was still tight, but looser (sp) than it was. Tightened it and all still seems to be fine........
