Default Automatic Compression Release Trouble????

Had ACRs installed with the 103 up grade and sometimes (6-8 times in the first 500 miles) they don't release when the motor trys to start? I mess with the key and throttle (dumb luck is my guess) and can get it to start but this is unacceptable! The Indy that did the work has never messed with harley ACRs and doesn't have an answer??

Where is he getting power from on the releases? Mine are wired to the starter solinoid and have been working well.

I've had ACRs for four years now and so far had no problems. Yours are either mechanically sticking in some way, or the electronics are not operating them properly. They should activate when pressing the starter and seal when releasing it. That should be easy to check!

I have the 103 kit on mine, no cam upgrade, and when I start it up when it is hot (like when getting gas) it takes two tries to get it started, no issue when it is cold. Is the the compression issue that needs ACR?

You paid him to install them so he better get some answers! Why is it when something goes wrong some guys just never admit it could be their fault.

Installation of this kit requires a calibration update using Digital Technician. Failure to download calibration update before starting motorcycle will result in ACR failure. (00567b)"

Partly compression ratio, but also cam timing. As an engine is tuned further away from stock it requires greater power input to turn it over when starting. Compression Releases, either automatic or manual, reduce the power required and allow a stock starter to turn over a heavily modified engine. The other solution is a more powerful starter motor, but there are limitations on the space available to get one in.

For several years now my original 1990 stock starter has been fine starting my S&S 107", complete with ACRs, although it is now on its last legs!

Anyone know how they work? Does compression close them? Seems like as long as they are powered they are open? I thought these things were "plug and play" but it seems a bunch of wires needed to be switched around, even with the HD harness? I think they either messed that up or didn't do the download correctly? If they can't figure it out, my plan is to take it to dealer and bill them.

Default wired to fuel pump for power

i added them to my bike when i did 10.5; pistons. you have to move wires in fuse box and move them over to make room for the 2 power wires to the acrs. here is wiring plans
http://www.harley-davidson.com/en_US...ts/-J04441.pdf
the small purple wire goes in socket 19 if i recall into emc this actually turns them on-opens them when u push the starter button. couple of ways to check spend the 45 bucks they cost for a spare and unplug one of yours behind the throttle plate and plug in the spare and hold in your hand you can feel the solenoid energize when it opens when you push the starter may not hurt to have plugs out if you are going to be doing a lot of turning over .- not sure if you will see the small dot on the end move outwards when it opens. another way to check is pull both spark plugs out and get your hands on a compression gauge and do one cylinder at a time. with arc;s plugged in like normal turn bike over and watch reading you get while turning over the bike. dont worry about throttle position and let reading max out record each one. if you force electronic throttle plate open with your finger you will get a much higher reading and bike starts using iac warm up step and opens the throttle plate a bit more than more for the first few seconds when it starts anyway. then do the same procedure and unplug you acr;s and take a reading. i had 225 lbs with no acr and goes down to 165 when they engage. i had a bad experience with a dyno tuner who didnt turn mine on while on the dyno and dicked me around about getting them turned one so i looked into the program he did on my bike and found it was completely unchanged from the se racetuner files so i just turned mine back on using my racetuner. i also had a loose power connection on battery while all this was going on and the starter did crap out 3 months later from all the abuse it took from the week of no acr;s 850 bucks later for new high torque starter and battery while at biketoberfest fixed up the damage. good luck be carefull in wiring fuse box the pins are a real bitch to get in and out unless you really get the hang of it . the orange plastic cover strips have to lift off to make removal easier. arc are in a series circuit with fuel pump wiring after the wiring changes.
not sure if the factory wiring follows the same exact circuit as the addition wiring harness kit
