Any one have experience with the replacement of a batwing outer fairing, specifically for an FLHT? I think I'll probably have to replace mine as one of the plastic mounts for the screw under the left ear of the wing has broken off.
Harley has a ABS plastic replacement I know, but I was wondering if some of the aftermarket replacements made with nylon and other materials are worth taking the chance with?
Any experience and feedback will be most sincerely appreciated.
Do you still have the small piece that broke off? I'd try a repair first. And I'm not sure you'll find an aftermarket one that would match up right with the stock inner.
If you have the part that broke off you can weld it using ABS plastic welding rods from Harbor Freight and elsewhere. Or JB Weld.
If you don’t have the threaded plastic piece that broke off you can make of mold of it using the one from the other side with Silly Putty then fill the mold with Plast Aid as explained in this vid.
Thanks for the feedback, I do have the piece, have it all cleaned off and will first try the JD Weld, if that doesn't hold up, I'll try the welding rod from Harbor Freight. Thanks again and ride safely!
I originally recommended JB Weld. However, after seeing the Plast Aid video, I think it would actually be a better solution. That's pretty amazing stuff. One of the things I liked about it is how fast it sets up and how you can manipulate it at various stages before it fully hardens. I have to get me some of that stuff.
