The boss decided she needs to be able to carry more cargo and I'm dead set against a trailer. Who is using a hitch mounted cargo rack and are you mounting auxiliary brake and turnsignal lights on it. What brands do you like best.
Saw one at a rally this weekend inserted into a receiver type hitch mounting. Kind of like the metal mesh ones you see mounted to 2" receivers behind SUV's. They had a small cooler like box mounted on it probably 18" square. Looked pretty neat for a little extra space but has to do bad things to the handling with weight that far back. I'd guess it should not be loaded too heavy, maybe 20-40 lbs. Did not notice any brand names.
Ive seen a couple on GW's, the extra capacity would sure be nice. Hmmm which would be worse for your handling, another 30lb stacksd way up high on top of the two bags already on top of the tourpak, or way down low on your center of gravity...
I have a reciever hitch on my bike and my dad and i built a cooler rack for 40 dollers in material. We built it in a day and works great. I have a light bar mounted underneath the tour pack because the cooler i carry covers the tail lights. I have not seen or felt any problems with the handling of the bike.
I presume your running the stock air shocks. If you going to add more weight to the back of the bike make sure you increase your pre-load air pressure or your front end will feel like its floating.

JJ, Yep I'm already running heavier oil in the rear shocks and plenty of air from running fully loaded 2 up
One hitch manufacturer recommended being very careful of the extended weight, the 2009 and up frames need more elaborate hitch design to not bend the frames/fender rails. 40-50 # trailer tongue weight was ok but extending that weight rearward with luggage or cooler adding leverage was discouraged.(by this maker)
