Father's Day Ride
My dad, my son, 2 daughters, their husbands, my wife, 4 grandkids and myself will all be meeting up and riding to a cafe that we all like thats about 120 miles away.
4 generations of riders.
For anyone out there that is about to ride a child on their bike for the first time, go over the "ground rules" with them before departing. I always walk them around the bike and show them where the exhaust is and warn them not to touch it, I show them the peg locations, explain to them how to get on/ off the bike and what signals I will give them to let them know when to get on/ off, tell them not to ever take their feet off the pegs (first-time riders often feel a need to stick their feet down to the ground when you stop and that can really get in the way of the driver), explain to them not to wiggle/ squirm/ move around much during riding (especially at slow speeds) because it's distracting and can throw the balance off and tell them that when we're moving if they try to talk I probably can't hear them, so wait until we're stopped. Before I started doing this "pre-ride talk" I had some really interesting surprises from first-time riders, people who have never been on a bike sometimes just don't know how much impact the passenger's behavior can have on how the bike handles.
Ezra is 9 years old and has been a rider himself since he was 4.
I bought him a Kawasaki KDX 50 for his 4th birthday. He has since moved up of course and is quite a good rider.
Ez was not interested in racing as he is a kick-*** baseball and football player and did not want to give up those passions for an all consuming MX career but sees motorcycling as an enjoyable recreation.
My previous bike was an Aprilia RSV 1000 with no passenger accommodations which I owned since he was 4 so a big part of my motivation for going to a touring bike was to take him along for the journey.....
He went with me to pick out the bike and "his" backrest on the Tourpak and now his day has finally come and he is looking forward to it with great enthusiasm.... there is a lot of build-up in fanfare in the Cave household as we approach Father's day. My wife, his sister and Ez have even ordered my gift from the HD dealership (it slipped out although IDK what it is).
The weather forecast looks great and the plans are set...we are going to get up early...wash the bike together (as it is still trashed from my 2000 mile trip of last week) and then head out on one of my favorite local loops.
I know you can all share in my joy of this perfect Father's Day moment....
Life is special....great sons and Harley Davidson's make it even more so.
Sorry if this thread made you throw up in your mouth a little bit.
Cave
Normally, my buds and I will take a Father's Day ride and smoke a few cigars, but this year we've finally sold our house and are headed down to the great state of Texas to really look for a house.
Enjoy your ride with your son as sadly, those moments go by in a flash.
