Plugged my GPS into the lighter socket on '09 EG. Blew out the adapter cable??? Test light, Seems the center is ground and outside is all hot??? What's up with that????
Seems like I read a similar post in the past and it was said that since the cigarette lighter doesn't care what the polarity is the assemblers don't either.
I don't know about the assemblers caring but the lighter will work either way-not so for electronics as you have found out.
Reverse the wires and try again. Should work for you that way.

Yes Harley has been known for this, pull the faring and swap the plugs
Sorry to hear that about your 09. My 10 is wired correctly. That's just plain sorry *** bullshit if Harley has no better quality control than that.
Shooter...there is never a reason to wire something backwards, especially when it goes against standard acceptable engineering practice followed by 100% of the rest of manufacturers that have vehicles with cig lighter plugs. I think HDs main concern about using cig plugs to power GPS or other devices is the length of the plug that may be used and the interference it could cause when turning left at slow speeds.

Upon close examination of the lighter socket on my '11 RGU, the center contact in the socket has "wings" that stick out to the side and then along the side of the socket for a short distance. When I plug in anything other than a lighter (like my cell phone charger) I make sure the side contacts on the plug don't touch the center point "wings" in the socket, and it works just fine. I imagine that if I wasn't careful about that, the side contacts on the plug would touch the "wings" and short out the plug, if not the socket.
I might be wrong, but I think that's why Harley doesn't recommend anything but their lighters in their lighter sockets. Why they didn't just use a standard socket is beyond me, other than they wanted to sell a "regular" 12V adapter as another accessory ....
