Default Noise in the primary? Goes away when I pull in the clutch.

I'm helping a buddy who has a 2007 SE Ultra. Just recently the primary started making a growling noise in neutral. When you pull the clutch in the noise goes away. I did notice that his clutch engages the second you start to let the clutch out and it's very hard to down shift, almost like the clutch isn't completely disengaged when pulling in the clutch.

I pulled the primary cover off expecting the compensator nut to be loose or a bad tensioner. Both seem fine. He has the new self adjusting tensioner.

Any ideas?

My '09 was making a noise....turned out to be the inner primary bearing.
Do a search here, several other, same problem!
Only had a little over 10K on it!

My '09 does it and it is called "neutral rattle" caused by the lash in the first gear set. They are straight cut gears and need the lash to mesh properly. Only hear it when at operating temp.

Oh, on the clutch it sounds like it needs adjusting.

Thanks for the replies. Sounds like more of a job than I want to tackle.

I'll let the pro's fix this one.
