Default Primary chain adjustment?

My manual says to get the rear tire off the ground to check the chain? I can do this on the ground correct or do i have to really get the tire up? Do you guys have any preference to how tight or loose to run it, other than what the manual says? I don't have a HD manual, i have a Clymer. Bike only has 3900 miles on it but i feel like the chain may be on the loose side. 06 Electra Glide
Thanks
Steve in Ct,, i told you i would have a bunch of questions

Harley-expensive. Factory manual-priceless. Clymer-worthless.

No you do not need to get the rear wheel off the ground to check and adjust the primary chain. You take the small side cover off and check the slack, I think its like 5/8" or something, and I think its cold... but I don't remember and I don't have my factory manual handy. It's easy to do but I always refer to the manual every time I do it because I can't keep all the little figures straight in my head.

+1

and an old phone book aborbs oil drips when placed under the bike better than the clymer.

a brick holds a door open better than a clymer.

BUT

the clymer can make your money go away.

Clymer is useless, as you've just proven.

Check the tension in 3 different places on the chain and adjust the loosest point. About 5/8" cold.

Or get a spring operated M-6 tensioner like I did and never worry about it again. I'm at 110,000 miles on my bike and everything in my primary including the adjusting shoe is still original!

you kind of need the rear wheel off the ground because you need to fine the tightest
point on the chain and adjust at that point...and to find the tightest point you need to turn the wheel..

...or roll the bike a long way in gear, to find it! So it is helpful to lift the rear wheel.

Or pull the plugs or plug wires and just tap the starter a couple of times....
