My dad got this bike several months ago and was more than he wanted to deal with, so I inherited it today. He changed front/rear brakes, rear tire, air filter and had the seat redone. The front fairing needs a lot of work. The brackets are broke where they meet the fairing, so I ordered some repair brackets from Dan Ragan, but they are also broke in half so I am going to have to weld them back together. Paint is faded, needs a carb kit and maybe a voltage regulator or stator. Wish me luck.
carb kit- the "performance kits" out there are junk ( dynojet/yost etc.) save your money.
$20 worth of parts, 40 minutes of time and a bunch of smarts will get you a great running carb which delivers good power, good MPG and at all altitudes.
easy CV carb tuning and modding advice at nightrider.com look for bike tech and CV carb
The Cv carb was introduced on sportys in 88, then adapted for big twins in 1990- by day 2 mods were figured out which really work.
there were multiple problems inside the cam chest on the 99 make sure that yours has been sorted out.
MK thanks for the info. I'll take a look over there. It's mainly the idle - 1/8 throttle position. Won't idle at all with out a choke until it's hot (not warm) and surges at low crusing speeds. I've already ran some sea foam in it while my dad had it and that didn't help. Looks like I'll have the fairing fixed this week, Dan's kit shipped yesterday and I'll have the brackets welded up tomorrow. Once I get the carb lined out I'll check all the cam chest issues to see where it's at. It's only got about 28,000 miles on it so I'm hoping any of the cam chest issues have already been addressed. I have low oil pressure at hot idle so I'm going to look at getting a higher volume/pressure pump in it. I have about 1-2 lbs at hot idle. Needs lots of polishing and cleaning. It has the tour pac but I don't like the looks with it on there. Will keep it for any road trips or 2 up riding.
After looking at that cv carb link I was able to change the boot between the carb and intake, put a bigger pilot jet on and the carb is running great. Bike runs real good now starts right up and idles like it should.
