The 120R does NOT have a Timken bearing on the crank.

For the DIYer I believe the Timkin on the crank is only avilable in the kit supplied by HD and is not installed at the factory on any new OEM motor. The price of the bearing kit is not too bad, but the tool to properly install the kit is another issue. Leaving the owner to either buy the tool or pay a dealer that has the tool to set it for you.

I've read where many bitch about "China" being stamped on the bearing set as a reason not to bother buying the HD kit, but don't realize that the word Timkin is in reference to the type of bearing set and not the US company that had held the patten rights many years ago.

j1mmy, I beg to differ that all SE bearings are of Timkin design. The 103 is the old SE motor and is being produced with out Timkins'.

Hard Ride, I understand what your saying, but come-on, really!

Gliden, that maybe true, but with all the bearing failures that has occured since. Is it good business to continue to use an inferior products in the production stage? America needs to bring the pride of craftsmenship back into the arena if we are to survive.

You can not simply say Timken any more! In years past they only made tapered roller bearings.
That is no longer true. Just like when you wanted a quality needle bearing you specified Torrington. And if if am correct they are owned by Timken.
So you can not go by the old standard you have to ask by actual type.

In this case I believe the question should have been.

Does Harley use any tapered roller bearings in their engines?

Yes vzts4q that's true,

'Timkin' based here in Ohio manufactures many styles of bearings. But I do believe that they where the first to develope the taper design that could handle high loads. That style of bearing is what HD offers in thier kit and refers to the name of Timkin, but in reference to the the manufactures taper bearing design and is not a product supplied by Timkin.

So you could expand on this thread to 'Does Harley use any tapered roller bearings in their engines?' and the answer I believe would be No!

Check the specs, according to the catalog I have they come with the timken bearing, unless its a miss print, or something has changed, I personally don't have a 120, only going by what I see.

They use their new lefty bearing on the crank, not a timken on the crank.. I know people who have split the cases on fresh 120r's and had dark horse do the magic on the crank / cases.

If so, Tampa Harley Davidson who constructs a custom built motor the 120R is not the same as Harley Davidson the Company using a tapered bearing in their assembly during production.
