I just got a $1000.00 quote from my local HD shop to change out bars on my '04 FLHR, was told 6 hrs at $85.00 an hour for labor was standard for a bar change. The total was for replacing all cables, internal electrical and $100.00 for shop fess/supplies....huh????
My local dealer wanted 10 hours labor. I bought the manual and did them myself. Bars, clutch cable and brake line. Take your time and do it yourself, it is really not that bad.
I just bought these Yaffe Monkey bars ......for cables and wiring Harley wants 1500 to change them....8 hours of labor plus cables. Can't be??
IF you are somewhat decent at turning a wrench you can do it yourself...get a service manual, take pics, make notes and take it slow.
Now with that being said..i'll tell you this..i put Yaffe Monkeys on my bike a few months ago and i did the entire install (also did a painted fairing swap) EXCEPT for pulling the wires through the bars. I tried, and tried, and tried, and it is NOT easy. my lack of patience ended up winning over and in the end i ended up damaging some of the wires. The bends in the bars are KILLER. there is no doubt in my mind that if i were working with standard shaped bars i could've done it all myself.
I have heard that you can actually send your controlls and Bars to Yaffe and they will pull the wires for you for a reasonable price.
Do a search on here there is a thread "monkey bar install with pics" ....been going on forever..has alot of good info. and there are a few guys that have detailed instructions that they will email you.
I ve been considering doing my own too... I have change the bars but not the cables. this is the part that I am worried about. How hard is the clutch cable to change?
Doc... instructions sent. Hope you find them useful. Just make sure that the one piece clamp is used instead of the old style 2 piece clamps. The one piece clamp will give your bars more stability.
Local Indy shop here in Mustang Okla only charges 850. That includes bars, all parts and labor. I thought no way. Calle him and he confirmed it. U even get to pick from alot of dif name brands. They are called Mustang baggers. Never been inside or had my work done yet but I will hit em up when I'm ready.
