Just did this. Did not remove the wheel. Used long screw driver and hammer to bend back the tabs by reaching through the wheel. Used blue locktight when re-installing. Front mount was a pain, but did it with a wrench.
Unbending wasnt really a problem. Bending the new ones was. I used blue loctite, but was paranoid about it. A few weeks later I had it in to the dealer to swap wheels, I made damn sure they bent the rest of the tabs I couldnt reach when they had the tire off.
just finished the "project". I did not remove the tire. Used a long wood chisel to bend back the tabs. Used some rags to support the fender instead of the block a wood as per the instructions. I used lock washers and blue loc-tite and did not bend back the tbs...will probably bend them back when it's time for a new tire.Took about an hour working time.

There were tabs I simply could not reach with this method - the tabs facing the back of the bike on the rear bolts. Not sure what your secret was but I was not able to get those bent.

one side I was unable to get "unbent" but was able to get a 1/2" box wrench on....they came off real easy as they were not torqued that much
