Guess I got to have my tune tweaked, I got pinging 5th gear up grades wick the throttle and it pings, gradual throttle roll on not so much.
I spoke to tune guy after the tune tweak he did a few weeks ago and he said good to go. Not like I wanted to go back to dyno land. I do not think that
* ping * is very good for the engine.
use 92 non corn premium fuel. I can't always get the same grade fuel, but the
ping was with the non corn fuel.
Temp today was 84 to 95 today. Rode about 250 miles.
What kind of tuner do you have? And what altitude is most of your riding?
I am at 6,000 + elevation. 06 Electraglide TC88, Can't remember off my head what cam's I put in. But they were Andrews, a step hotter than stock. Updated to the newer cam chain and tensioner and fueling oil pump.
Used the HD Race TUNER.
Had Sangers in Ft.Collins run it on Dyno and tune back in 2010.
After 2 years I felt it was a little too rich. Plugs were good, but pipes were on dark side.
Every time I accelerated check engine came on.
Took back this spring, connected to computer (NO DYNO) and just adjusted the fuel ratio in the cruise range.
Mileage up to about 40mpg at 65mph and less, with 2 up. Check engine light never came on, during a 4,000 mile trip 2 up. Accelerates better.
changed from a 13.6 to 13.8 ratio.
Sounds like on yours the ratio is too lean
BTW if you are using the HD Race Tuner. You can do this yourself. Need to download the "map" from your tuner guy onto USB. Then transfer to your laptop.
Get the cable from laptop to Tuner and connect tuner to your bike. Just type in the new numbers.
We still don't know what kind of tuner your running....If its a PCV, get into the timing tables and retard the timing in the RPM ranges your noticing the pings. I left the fuel AFR's alone from the map FuelMoto sent me with my PCV and with the help of a forum member, I systematically retarded the timing 1 degree at a time. I took mine out for a nice long run today, temps in the upper 90s and I didnt feel any pings on any rpm range. I also added 5% more fuel in the 750-2000 0% throttle positions for decel popping. It was a very successful run. If I can do it so can you and you don't need to take it back to the shop.
My recommendation is to upgrade to an autotuner and forget about multiple trips and payments to correct a bad tune. There are a few models available but I'm a strong believer in Tmax. Pretty pricey initial investment but was well worth the cash to me when I didn't have to pay for a retune after cam install.

My opinion but, pinging does not signify a bad tune. I dont know anuthing about a SEPST, so Im going to let those in the know chime in.

Uh, yes it does. The SEPST has a knock feature that can be turned off and unfortunately some tuners turn it off to get better numbers on the dyno instead of leaving it on and tuning the pinging/knocking/detonation out of it properly.
If the knock feature is on, it can retard up to 8 degrees of timing out of the tune to keep the bike from pinging. If the knock feature is on and it's still pinging, the tuner sux IMO.
