I think the newest evo you can get is the way to go. I have a 91 evo that has been awesome. Having said that my friend had a 96 evo that was way smoother in every way. Both have been really reliable.

1996 Evo Ultra ! Beat on that bike, modded the motor with cam etc, put a ton of chrome covers on it (which I won't do now causa hotter new bikes) then ran it thru hell and high water on road trips. Ran like a top and traded it for my 2010 Flhx...It's still running strong as far as I know. Great motor !

All that I can think of is the song, "Love the one your with"...

Its got to be the one you presently own, or just buy or build.

Love the one your with...

early 90's cases could be a problem, I think '92 was the peak year for porous cases.

as with all H-D models there are slight changes from year to year.

brakes were unchanged all through the evo years

for the FXR models the 39mm forks are better ( 87 up depending on model)

the cv carb started in '90 on big twins

89+ clutches are better

'93 started the head breathers and oil tank under the tranny, which is better than the previous design

96 + fairings are the same as used now pretty much, the earlier was clunky and a little tricky for opening and closing and windscreen swaps.

I have an 88 FXRP- it's been awesome, so was my '95 FLHTC.

99 was the last year of the evo.
My softail was one.

Here's my 99 FXSTC that I put a 16 inch front wheel on and a Fatboy front fender.
