I just recently bought a 2001 ultra claasic and the speedometer quit working after one week, someone told me to clean the speed sensor which I did and few day later and less than 50 mile the speedo quit again. Any ideas, as I'm a newbie. Thanks. Also I ordered a set of Dakota guages.....

Buy a new speed sensor.

Yep. Every time I've heard of this, cleaning the sensor will work for a short while, but aq replacement is what fixes it.

Thanks, is it normal for those metal shavings ( I assume they are metal) to gather so quickly on the sensor?

No, that would not be a "normal" thing. If I were you, I would change that transmission oil and take a look at the old oil for metal debris. Maybe try to see whats what in the transmission. Then if it keeps reoccurring, then no doubt there is an issue inside the tx.

Thanks to everyone for your help, the speed sensor was defective and I had all the fluids changed.
