I had the same problem on my 03 Road King, first thing to check is the speed sensor. Pull it out and clean it off, it will have some metal shavings on it. If cleaning the sensor doesn't help change the sensor out, it costs about $75. If that doesn't do it, you'll probably need a new speedo and guess what, you cant buy it from HD any more. You'll have to go after market.

Boe1971200 is on the right track with the speed sensor. It is a common problem.

Mine died a few weeks ago. Everything went out no mine though. Nothing lit up. The head it self went bad. It would just go out then come back on. If it's just the speed needle on yours it's more than likely the speed sensor. Mine was the head

Easiest way to check to see if its the speed sensor is if you turn signals wont cancel.

yup, i was just gonna say, if the auto cancel on your turn signals is gone to, then it's the speed sensor without a doubt. Super easy, and relatively cheap fix. Had to do mine a couple years ago.
