Default Tire repair?

Just found a drywall screw in my rear tire. This is a new set of tires, less than 4000 miles on them. Is plugging the tire on the bike a safe option? Or is it new tire time?

It's probably OK to plug it but being the paranoid person I am, I would replace the tire,,, scary feeling when a tire blows, or a real bitch when you come out from work or a bar and find you had a slow leak,,,

I've been plugging mine for years. I plugged a rear tire with about 5K on it and then rode from NC to San Diego. Never
gave me a problem. Of course it's all a matter of choice, but the plugs DO work and it will keep a considerable amount of
money staying in your wallet!

Bike tires are diferent than car tires in that you only have 2 tires that support you. A blow out on a bike can be a bit more un safe for obvious reasons. I would replace the tire just for safety sake. I feel that my worthless life is worth more than the cost of the tire.

Take a look here for some input https://www.hdforums.com/m_83584/tm.htm

I have plugged tires with suscess, but I feel that it is a temporary fix. If you want to keep the tire, break it down and do a proper fix from the inside. Just an opinion.

Regards,

Bill

I'm with Bill on this one! There's too much riding on a repaired tire to take a chance.

Thanks for all the input on this guys.

The screw was deep in one of the grooves about 1" away from the left side of the rib in the meat of the tire.

I talked to my dad about it, (35 year wrench) and he put my fear of plugging the tire to rest. I used a 7" Camel brand plug and rubber cement. No bubbles with soapy water. I'll keep an eye on it, if it leaks it's getting replaced.

Dad says he went 2 seasons on a plugged rear tire, till it was worn out.

Yeah, the friggin screw I pulled out was no ordinary drywall screw. It was a 1 1/4" hardened #10 bugle head. It must have been in there for a while, the head was worn down to the bottom of the phillips drive.

What did you do to fix your tire?

I was at my local stealer yesterday, they had a sign on the window 20% off Dunlop tires. But its a 3 week wait for them to change a tire. Rediculous! I walked back through the service area and not 1 wrench was turning, 3 techs were just standing in a circle b/s ing. Do dealer techs work on flat rate or are they hourly?
