I ride slouched so a taller windscreen wasn't really a necessary but the Harley Windsplitter was enough for me. That and the lower fairing got rid of the buffeting all together and I think it looks damn nice. Other than that...

Highway Pegs
Floor board extensions

and you are set.
(though I have gone beyond just those modifications)

Farthest I've traveled on mine so far is 526 miles one way to our cottage in Parkers Cove Nova Scotia from Stowe, VT. Only mods were a simple stage 1, and a 6.5 Klock windshield. Comfortable as can be. The rain sucked big time on the trip home however. 6 hours of riding in Torrential down pours and huge ground strike lightning.

My mods:
8" Clearview smoke recurve
Sundowner seat
Floorboard extenders
Heat deflector shield (at tank/seat)
Lowers and fairing deflectors
Sissybar/backrest for passenger w/luggage rack for soft luggage

Rode her 6300 miles (14 states, plus Candada), 21 days. No problems at all.
Could have kept going but was out of vacation...

Never traveled with it stock. On my 09 SG I did 3000 miles in five days. Mods were
WO575 bars, 10.5" recurveshield, C&C solo, Airhawk cushion, lower fairings, and tour pack mounted solo.
I've traveled 4000 miles to Key West and back on my new CVO SG with WO575 bars, 10.5" recurve shield, stock Ultra seat, passemger backrest with T Bag on seat.
Love the SG, it's a cool blvd. cruiser and as capable on the long haul as an Ultra.

Any suggestions? I am looking for a better seat for short, 200 to 300 mile day rides (two up) when I don't want the tour pack but a seat that doesn't look like a sofa on the bike.

I tried a stock Ultra seat last fall and my tailbone couldn't stand it after riding 60 miles. Sold it after 400 miles.

600 miles on mine and afterwards I sent the seat in for modifications (mean city cycles), added a backrest, replaced the stock wind shield, highway pegs and replaced the stock grips.

This is what I have done....

Mean city cycles memory foam mod + they lowered the seat 1.5" and narrowed it in the front.
FBI floorboards w/ the jack knife style highway pegs. I went with the floorboards because they were designed with the jack knifes in mind and I wasn't too keen on cutting in to my stock boards.

3 pair Ldcomfort.com riding shorts- they are like bicycle shorts with better material.

Avon Air handgrips

Mustang Backrest

HD aerator seat pad.

Popping advil while you ride... believe me it helps.

I'm adding a LRS ultra recurve shield before I head to Sturgis.

On my 2010 StreetGlide with 30K miles, mostly touring, the FIRST thing I did was replace the stock crap saddle with a C&C SportTourer with rider's backrest. Second was extending the floorboards out. Third was a slightly taller windshield. Fourth was the Mid-frame heat deflectors from MoCo. That's about all. Still running stock motor. My plan is to put at least 100K on this bike before it is 5 years old.

6 days, 3000+ miles, two up ........ Already done:
LRS 7" shield
Fork baffle
Lower "wings" on fairing
Vented lowers
Mean city seat mod, narrowed, lowered, memory foam in front, double memory foam in back
Passenger footboards
Detachable tour pack with backrest

Only thing I'll be changing is adding some highway pegs for more foot placement options, didn't want to add them, don't need them for comfort, but after 6 days of 100 - 109 degrees I need to get my legs up from the engine heat.

Even with the the heat, we did very well, the lil' lady never had an issue. One thing I do know based on what you said, the passenger is not real happy after some time spent with a sissy bar pad, that's where the tour pack really shines for passenger comfort, the back support up higher means a lot on long trips.
