Default Tool shopping for the King

Now that I've had my Road King over a month I can see I'm going to need to make a tool shopping trip. First item is 3/8" drive deep well sockets; whats your opinion 6pt or 12pt? Second item is 3/8" drive hex bit sockets; whats your opinion standard or ball end? Third item is 3/8" drive Torx bits sockets. Last item is couple 3/8" drive universals.

The hex and torx bit sockets will probably end up being a combination of 3/8" and 1/4" drive and I assume I can get standard deep well sockets and not metric.

depends on how far you might take it down 6 pt is good for on the road repair 12 pt better if you dig into her. as far as hex ball end is good as long as you do not break loose with the ball end but they are good for turning out after breaking loose, if you break the ball end off, hard to get out. hope this helps.

one thing you might look into is for the hex, the best I have found are the Swiss PB's, you can get these from tool lady dot com. they do not strip out.

Generally, use 6pt sockets for 6pt bolts, 12pt sockets are for 12pt bolts. You don't have that many 12pt fasteners on your bike, (the head bolts and brake calipers come to mind). Always use a 6 pt socket when using a torque wrench.

I use Bondhus hex and torx wrenches, and have several sets. I like the t handle for most jobs, but also have stubby L handle and both ball end and regular end hex wrenches.

The 6 point sockets are stronger than the 12 point and you would use these more often.

I also have a set of Bondhus ball end hex wrenches. If you buy them, make sure you get the larger set that has the 7/16" wrench.

Good idea to also have a set of 3/8" drive hex sockets and Torx sockets.

The higher end Torx sockets like Snap-On,Matco cost $200 plus. There are less expensive ones like Craftsman,Kobalt,Husky,Lilse,HF that will work.
Some Torx sets dont include a T27,which you will need.

There are many threads here about tools if you search, also there are many opinions on which brands to buy.

Why get down on a guy actually wanting to his own work? Everyone starts somewhere. My garage complement of tools isn't awesome. Just enough to be dangerous

To the OP, the previous posts are great suggestions.

Sounds like you have some good suggestions. You might want to add one of those little extendable mechanics magnets in there too. good for reaching dropped misc. fasteners and what not in hard to reach places. Also helps with getting snapped ball end's out if you do have the misfortune
