Check around for an Auto Electric store. They should be able to rebuild it since it is the same as a mitsubishi starter (depending on the year). I got mine rebuilt, solenoid kit, turn armature on lathe, and install new brushes for about $65.00. No more starter problems. Or do it yourself with a solenoid kit $40.00, and then emery cloth your armature, install new brushes.
I'm still having the issue, now sometimes I smell something burning, after a long and painful start. Is this the starter clutch?
I can buy a high-torque H-D starter online, and my dealer will install it for about the same, as parts and labor for them to order and install the new starter clutch.
Is it difficult to replace the entire starter assembly? I've done it on my old Stingray Corvette before, and the only pain there was the header needed to be removed to give me clearance.
mine was replaced under warranty. refer to the service manual. unless you open the primary, the starter is attached with two bolts and wiring plug so it looks easy enough to pull out.
1.) burning: DO NOT hold the starter button if the starter is not turning- the windings will burn up- which is fatal. this is preceded by a whining sound as the windings heat up
2.) diagnosis is key, is it the motor or the starter clutch- ( "bendix")
if the latter- dawg has posted the toyota part number for a $35 starter clutch.
3.) servicing the starter is easier than on a chevy
