I just use my Garmin that I use in my car. Bought a Ram mount and it works great. $99.00 vs the 400-600 they want to charge for true motorcycle GPS units.
I do that too but it doesn't have Bluetooth, Sat Radio and weatherproof. But like you, I'm okay with that.
