S&S carb problems
S&S carb problems
First I'll start with what I know
2004 FLHT
88TC
34000 miles
stock exhaust
looks like a screamin eagle airfilter
S&S shorty carb 31 jet
When I bought it had a vac leak and dealership fixed it adjusted and ran fine for a while. It started running worse again so I went to S&S web and readjusted from scratch. Ran fine cool and the rough when it warms up and strong smell on unburned fuel. I dropped it down to a 29 and it ran smooth, started fine was just under powered. I went back today and put the 31 back in readjusted and ran fine in the garage. Rode around town and out the highway probably 15 minutes and felt like I lost smoothness. Came back to the garage tried to readjust to smooth out and it would just not do it. And smell of fuel back. I just do not have problems with 29, but been told too lean and will burn something and just has not power.

I had a 2002 Rk with the S&S E shorty, with the smell of fuel I would check your float adjustment, as well as the needle and seat to make sure it does shut off the gas when closed, I did have a defective seat on my carb. When you take the float bowl off and on to change jets don't forget the blue o-ring, it often slides off and will cause the fuel smell as well if not put back in place.
I can't help you with the jetting not knowing what rpms you are having problems and what size main jet you are running, but those are covered in the S&S manual. Hope this helps.
