Gotta be careful that ya don't knock the bearing out with the heavy blows. Slide the axle out as far as ya can then grease it and slide it back in. That will get some lube on the dry bearing surface.

It seems you have a corrosion problem inside the spacers or on the shaft. High pressure hot water rinsing did this to me in the past. Pack marine grease and wipe off the dirt, don't rinse it.
