Oil cooler
I know alot of you guys are real big about oil coolers. I am just wondering if anyone has used one of these.

I started using one of these on my Dyna and kept it when I got my Classic. It really seems to suck alot of heat out of the filter.

Thanks......Not sure how it would work for the oil throughout the bike but having an engineering degree I understand how a 'heatsink' works and that is exactly what that is acting as. It is pulling the heat from the filter, as much as possible, and dispersing it through the fins. I take it FLHT they are fairly inexpensive?
I've seen these for years and have always felt they wouldn't provide that much added cooling over the bare filter. I've never seen any claims or tests as to how effective they are. Also, what cooling is done starts immediately, and you don't need it 'til the bike is hot, thus being the virtue of thermostats in conventional coolers. It might be okay for summer, but I wouldn't use it in winter. Since you already have it, I'd say put in on in June thru September and leave it off the rest of the time.
It'd be interesting to do a test if you have an oil-temp gauge. Run the bike 'til it reaches maximum oil temperature, then slip the heatsink sleeve on and see if temperature moves down.

Please be careful how you word your posts. Some of the guys may get one of these to put on their 'johnson' and be totally disappointed and come looking for you.
Looks like you'd need longer fins to get much out of it. These look more like ribs than fins, so you're only slightly increasing the heat transfer surface area over the smooth filter can.
Also, how tightly does this fit on the filter? Unless it's pretty tight or you use a heat transfer lubricant, dead air space could actually act as an insulator around the filter.

I think that if the finned unit was painted a flat black it would radiate heat better. And if it had some conductive paste in between the filter and the part that slides over the filter it would also work more efficiently.
I don't think that it would hurt in the winter, I don't see it really dropping the temps that radically enough to be a viable unit! I would like to see some data on the unit! Do you have a link or anything that has been written up on it to test it?

I really dont know much about these things and have never done any testing with it. It was introduced by Harley Davidson in 1998. It doesnt wrap clear around the filter about 3/4 the way, you slip it on after the filter is installed. When I saw it on e-bay back when I had my Dyna I thought what the hell, and bought one. If nothing else it looks good. I sure dont think it hurts anything.
