kinda depends on how big it is, or how mushy it is.

i do have a luggage rack so i will only be answering thinking of how i would do it. can't like test it out

i would most probably use a net, i have a number of them. you can pick them up at any harley shop. they have hooks on the corners.

so two of the corners would like hook on the saddle bag bars. the other end would go over the passenger backrest and the hooks would go down the sides. i am thinking that depending on the size, they might be able to hook to the bars holding on the trunk. if they aren't long enough then you could always hook them to a bungy cord and rap it around under the trunk to the other hook.

the seat is actually a better location then the luggage rack on the trunk because it can hold more weight and it is also lower.

by putting the top side around the passenger backrest you are creating tension on it without squishing the bag.

the bag does not have to be real tight as it will not go anywhere.

For long trips, packing a bag on the passenger seat also provides a really comfy backrest.

Make sure there is no way the bag can shift/move or it can cause a crash.

An assortment of bungee cords & an elastic net w/ hooks can be a bikers best friend. I never take a long trip without extras.

Does your bike have a passenger grab rail?
If not you might want to get one, it is the perfect way to cinch down a bag like you are talking about.

Bungee cord and pack it full enough to use as a backrest. With you leaning back against it and the Bungee to hold it when you are not, you shouldn't have any trouble.

While packing "stuff" on the passenger seat is a viable resolve to your situation, be careful so as not to allow the gear to rub/chafe the area around the speakers ( ask me how I know? ) ... I managed to do just that on my 1992 FLHTCU and really mucked up the speaker housing area ... Oh well, It's only "brand new" once. Live and learn.
