Got a question for the Touring crew. I am looking for a working/rideable project without breaking the bank on buying the scoot. I found a 99 RK with 54k miles I'll leave price out of it...just want to know if it is worth put money and years in or would I be putting more time and cash into keeping it running? I am a 5 to 10k miles a year rider. I'll add I have only seen pics have not seen it in person yet. Thanks in advance
Without seeing the bike or knowing anything about it, its hard to say. The bike could have plenty left, or be a dog on its last leg. A little more info is needed IMO.

a carbed bike is much easier to work on and tune, the early EFI's were pretty limited.
Look at used Police models. FLHTP and FLHP. Street Glide and Road King respectively. Generally you can buy them 4K to 5K cheaper than their civilian models. On '07 to '11's, you get a free 103" motor. I bought a 3 year old FLHTP for $10500. A comparable Street Glide would have cost way over 15K, and only would have the 96".
I know of NO ONE who regrets buying a Retired Cop Glide.
I bought my 01 EGS with 56k on the clock. For what I paid if feel like I stole it. Built the bagger I wanted and saved tons of dough. I do all my own wrenching too. That can make a difference
I think the key to this question is the price they are asking for the bike. This time of year you can start to get some decent deals on bikes - I just picked up an 05 RKC with 21,000 miles for 9,200 in mint condition so good deals are out there.

This, especially if you're looking at it as a project. How extensive of a project are you looking at? Clean up and ride, bling out, major motor work... ?
The 99's had first year rollout blues. Now, for a screaming bargain, look at a 97-98 Evo Ultra. They ran great, were easy to work on, were fairly reliable, and parts(including new motors) are available and fairly cheap. They also get good gas mileage.

Not always true. My 2007 flhp is a 96 not a 103. I paid $7,800 for it in Jan. of 2011.
