I had my rear brake fail last year at Sturgis, in fact it was on that 5 MPH switch back, I just completed the turn and hit my back brake as it was on the decent. Peddle went to the floor, down shifted and traveled about two miles in first gear until had a shoulder to stop on. No missing fluid in the master cylinder, no liquid anywhere on the line, put the cover back on pump the brakes and liked nothing ever happened. since the high altitude and me hitting the brakes a little more than normal I thought I might have boiled the fluid. Following week I saw the recall brought the bike in no issues since, needless to say when I told my wife she was screaming at me to stop for about a mile and a half the last half was after I finally stated STFU. Might not be able to hear the stereo at 80 but I can damn sure hearty wife screaming at 5
I was this close (holding my fingers up about 1/4") to pissing myself at the end of your story....Glad you two made it safe.
This thread is the first I heard of this recall (I'm always last to a party too) and my F'n bike is one with a recall....WTF Harley MOCO...Were's my letter?

I'm calling a stealership in the morning.
Yeah no telling how loud she would have been if I would have done the upgrade. Call for an appointment for the brake switch, once they have you scheduled it takes longer for he bike to cool down to work on it than the job itself. 30 mins tops.
Got on the bike today to take it to the dealer. They have the recall part in stock. When I left the driveway I pumped the rear brake a couple of times and it worked. A little squishy but still worked. Still no fluid leaking anywhere. Bad rear brake master cylinder??
Just a few minutes ago...today...did I say just a few minutes ago?? I was pulling out of a parking lot and my back brake bottomed out without stopping the bike. Shook me up some. Used the front brake to get home. I'm no mechanic...wish I was. Gotta have it towed to HD unless I want to ride 30 minutes with just the front brake.
After reading other posts, I realized that the brake switch may have had something to do with this. Two days ago, my brake lights would not go off. I was going to get it fixed this weekend, then today the back brake went completely out. Got to be a connection.

It sounds like your rear brake rotor is warped a bit, and pushing the pads inwards so far that you cannot obtain sufficient pressure with "the first push" of the brake pedal.
I had the same problem. It went like this:
Ride a ways, push the rear brake pedal, and .... right to the board, essentially, nothing.
Pump the brake a few times, and it seemed back towards normal, but....
... ride a little more, then apply the brake and ... nothing again.
Is this the way it is for you?
If so, have the rear rotor checked for runout. Odds are, it's warped past acceptability, and should be replaced.
