Has anyone ever relocated the temp guage's sending unit from in the fairing to under it in the path of oncoming air, like a car's unit is? I would think that it would considerably increase accuracy.
Nope, JMHO. I think you're right, though, the air temp gauge would be much more useful if it actually read OAT instead of the temp inside the fairing. I do glance at mine occassionally, but it's never kept me from riding if it was too cold. Just reminds me I must be crazy.
Do we really even need an outdoor air temp gauge? Oil temp gauge would be much more useful.
What do you need an oil temp gauge for? I already know the engine is HOT. I use a quality synthetic oil, and don't even think "man I wonder hot my engine is running" It just doesn't matter, the're built to run hot. Good synthetic oil has a flash point of over 450 degrees. What's the hottest your engine has ever run? Just use a good oil and forget about it!
Like my car, I kind of like monitoring theOAT on a long trip, one more thing to entertain me. If I had to choose one or the other, the oil temp is better, I want both. HD must not want us to know how hot the oilgets.

Synthetic oil may have a flash point over 450 degrees when it burst into flames and explodes, but I want to know before this, when its lubrication properties break down, around 310 deg F, look at my signature.
[sm=dontgetit.gif] I thought this was about location of air temperature gauge sending unit....not oil temperature........or is it about both now [sm=WTFsgign.gif]

This was discussed a while ago, and people have done it with good results. If I can find the thread, I'll post the link here.
