Default SE compensator ramps gaulding Help....

I put this S.E. compensator in when the bike had around 7,000 miles, it now has 22,000 and seems like i get alot metal dust in oil, I removed the primary cover because of noise when cold think'n adjuster loose when cold but chain is is tight, then I noticed a gaulding on the compensator ramps and was wundering if anyone with theis se comp has noticed the same, After bike warms up the loose chain noise is gone.. but sometimes i notice a noise when bike under a load taking off that is coming from compensator, Here is some pics of what I have found and and would be cool if anyone has thiers apart and could tell me if this is normal and they see it on theirs, I run aimsoil in primary as well....

this is normal....consider the compensator a consumable part....the ramps will wear over time.

annoying isn't it . . .?

I figure I'll be replacing compensators at about 20 to 25k intervals until Harley (or someone else) comes out with a decent working design.

What he said. It's gotta be a weak spot some place.

One of the things that keeps me away from the longer stroke motors, ( 07 and up,) are these self destructing compensators. I have never heard of a compensator going bad on any Big Twin '06 and earlier, (not mention my '00 RG with 114,000 miles on it.)

It's all since the 96/103's came out.

But why? Stronger compensators don't fix the underlying problem, just the symptoms of it. Something is fundamentally wrong in the design. Anybody know what that might be? (Clearly Harley's not talking.)

Thanks for all the good reply's, I was just opening it up to see how loose chain was due to noise when it was cold, that was my original problem was and spoted the gaulding on ramps...

Mine only wears about half the distance up on the ramps. What lube are you using? I've got 30,000 on my SE comp and seems OK. Perhaps my standards are lower than yours. I'm using 20W-50 engine oil and all seems well.

I also went wild with the Dremel when I cut the various lube channels in mine. In addition to the standard slots, I cut a small slot lengthwise on each spoke from inside of the wear face to 1/2 way through the wear face. My intent is for oil to sling out into the slots but not exit the wear interface as easily as it would had I cut the slot fully across the wear area. So far, so good.

two forces at work...more powerful engines and longer gear ratios designed for better gas mileage but harder on the drive train...harley thought that the IDS would help but it still has a long way to go.

I'm changing my sprockets to reduce the stress on the drive train....might also up the spring pack in the SE comp, instead of the two big springs, two middle size springs and half of a small spring, want to try replacing the two middle size springs with a set of large springs. right now the SE comp does not have preload throug out it's full range of travel...uping the spring pack should give it preload through out it's range.

This is how bad it can look after 57k miles

Here is my thread on the subject, I think Harley should just consider it a wear item and replace it every xxx miles.
