Default Changing Bars Adventure (little long but amusing)

After reading a crap load about changing the bars (from this forum of course) I finally decided to order the Santee 11" apes, Magnum black pearl cables and such and have at it. I was all prepared and the final items came in Friday.
Friday night after debugging a neighbor’s computer I started the tear down at about 9ish....now anyone who has done this before will know..once you start you get hyped up enough you DO NOT want to finish. That is how I was. I had everything apart and began pulling wires about 10pm. did well, except I tried to pull the tbw wires and the control wires together. That didn't work out so well and about 130 I figured out to run them separate. Took about five minutes once I had that figured out. I decided that it was finally getting late (or early depending on perspective) and bolted the bars on the bike and plugged everything in so that I could determine where I stood when I awoke. Sat on the bike for the first time with the bars and my ears started poking out farther from the smile I had on my face. Then I turned the ignition on, run button, crank.....NOTHING!!! No fuel pump turn on. Bike cranked but no turny over!! FRACK!!!! After reading Josh1's thread I decided that I would have to pull the tbw sensor in the morning and get an SE 32310-08 to eliminate the damned plug.

Get up Saturday about 9am, call Crush at NO HD and locate one 45 minutes away at Hammond HD. After eating breakfast and rounding up the troops we headed out by 11ish. Now I have heard that there is a drought in most of the country…I WISH SOMEONE WOULD LET US HAVE A DROUGHT…at least for a few days. Driving on the interstate the rain got so bad I had to slow own 20mph under the speed limit. A 45 minute drive took about 85 minutes. Get the part (Tim the Parts Manager at Hammond HD is great as is Willie the Sales Manager btw) the power goes out twice while they are trying to run my card. Go to leave and we can’t see the truck on the parking lot to leave it is raining so hard. End up buying $30.00 more stuff, and an hour later we are headed back home.

Get the tbw sensor installed in the bars put them back on, turn on the switches and MF’er no fuel pump again…..SOAB!!!! Didn’t get excited, but did decide to take a break. Went the fridge and forgot that I drank the last of the beer last night. Got on the web and started playing a little Battlefield 3. Nothing like blowing people up and killing them to calm you down. Went back out to the bike and decided to starting pressing all of the buttons with the run switch on….I pressed the cruise button toward RESET and the fricking fuel pump came on…Wadda ya know!!! Seems I swapped two of the white wires in the right hand control harness when I reassembled the plug. The mistake that I made was going by my pictures and not the wiring diagram in the manual (SHOULD KNOWN THAT ONE!!!). Swapped the wires and PRESTO!

Button all of that up and go to change the brake line. Take the new one out of the box and begin assembly taking note that the upper line appears to be very short…Way too short. Mock it up and sure enough…about 6”s too short. YOU GUESSED IT YET…I ordered the wrong frickin line. When I was looking it up on Magnum’s site I unintentionally got the length off the stock line instead of the +6. I stopped right there (already after 5pm) and texted my buddy about screwing up the order. NP he will order the correct line for me Mon or Tues when he makes his order. NOW I have to wait for the correct line to come in to finish the fairing.

Today (Sunday) I got up and swapped the clutch cable. That was a piece of cake except that the cover was all but welded onto the transmission case. Had to tap it a bit to get it to loosen up. Now that is done and waiting on the brake line…and the rain to stop.

I’ll post pics and updates later on. Bike looks killer with the Santee’s and it feels awesome. I cannot wait to ride (might even do so in the rain).

Yeah, I ran wires backwards too. Drew a really good diagram, marked top bottom of connector. Turns out top half of connectors are right on both sides but bottom was exactly backwards. Which means horn, high beams, run, and start worked but on my ride found out left turn didn't. So I reversed them in fairing. No screwing with bars thank goodness. Two days later I realized I did same thing to other side when radio mode wouldn't work and I had no cruise.

That being all I messed up I feel pretty good.

The bad thing for me is that after I ran wires and had bars bolted in place I took the tape off handlebar ends to discover Yaffe didn't chrome under the grips. My Battistini's are swiss cheese so you can see bars underneath. Now that the custom replacement bars have arrived I have to do the whole handlebar job allllll over again!!!

It'll be worth it when they are done. Maybe after this I'll put myself up for hire locally.

I actually on screwed up the stripe colors on two white wires. I was glad I found that problem because I was ready to pull the Grip sensor and try and exchange it thinking it was bad.

I had some trouble getting the right brake line when i did my bars too. i went with Magnum cables...and went to their website to get the part number...when i went to my dealer they cross refferenced the numbers in the Drag Specialties books. I odrered a +4 and when the line came in it was exactly the same lenght as the stock line. I think the D.S. book had the wrong lenght for the stock line. I had to take back and just order the line based on the ACTUALL length...not worrying about +4 or cross refferencing numbers blah, blah.
You might wanna measure your line and then add what you want (+6) and call you parts guy and double check that the new line will in fact be the overall lemght you're looking for.
I know nothing worse then waiting for a part and having it come in wrong. REALLY takes the wind out of your sails.

Thanks for the tip. On mine I screwed the pooch! I remember telling him to order 19" because that is what I remembered off the website. Turns out the 25" is what I needed and when I looked at Magnums site last night it was evident I didnt read the correct line when I read 19". So it is my fault.

Oh man!! I did mine 2 weeks ago and actually caught myself doing the one side backwards as I was reinstalling the plug. I double checked my diagram on the first side and it was correct, but damn if I almost did it wrong on the second one. I also ordered the wrong brake line from Magnum. It was the right length, but I didn't realize that the stock banjo fitting was straight (my beach bar kit came with new braided lines that were 90 degree banjo coming off the master). So when I got the line from Magnum, it was straight. I sent it back and they put a 90 on it for me. Most of my down time was waiting for the UPS guy!! LOL!!!

It's like my grandmother Nana Rosanadana says - "it's always something!". Going through the same thing this weekend with brake cables on my Ultra. Simple $99.00 bar upgrade has me in the hole $200 more for brake lines and while I am at it I may as well change the pads............

As promised here are some shots of the bars installed...still a few things to do both before and after the new brake line arrives.

I installed the santee 11" bars and had a similar issue when i had the corner wires swapped around and had no throttle, luckily it only took me about thirty minutes to diagnose.
